It's been nearly 6 weeks since me and Bb had a break in KL. That treat was surprisingly fun, most probably due to the overnight sleeper train trip. I started work in my new job and life was slowly getting normal. Life as an executive stays pretty routine. Thoughts of wandering around in Bermudas and beers (lots of beers) temporarily took reserve status. Thoughts of progressing up the social ladder, buying a car and networking parties took center stage. Scary and dangerous thoughts indeed. Thinking of being a yuppie is really exciting. A little bit too exciting.

My cousins were cornering me into going on a trip. Many thanks for them who offered to do so much, 1) leaving a seat for Bb 2) accommodating us in terms of the schedule 3) offering to drive. We wanted to go Malacca initially, to climb Gundung Datuk, but due to the happenings in Fraser's Hill, we decided to change location to Pulau Tioman instead. I have to say that it is a damn corny decision, but then again, the perk is there is DUTY FREE beer in Tioman. Though not a lot of people will know about this.

We started out on the morning of 18th, which me and Bb slept for only 3 hours. From Johor Bahru, we drove on my cousin's Proton Wira up on Route No. 3 (east route) that will bring us all the way to Kota Bahru (in Kelantan). We didn't go there as that will take days and we stopped at Mersing (2 hours). Not much towns along the way, unlike route No. 5 that will take us to Pontain.

Upon reaching Mersing, we got ourselves ferry tickets and headed straight for the ferry. We listened to Lonely Planet and headed for Kampong Salang. Plan was to go to Kampong Tekek to get duty free beer, then to our guesthouse in Kampong Salang.

We headed for the duty free beer immediately upon reaching Kampong Tekek. God knows why the Malaysian government granted duty free status to Tioman without telling the whole world about it. Who cares? We got 2 cartons and drank ourselves silly.

Introducing the main characters for the Tioman trip, Shi Yew (from left), Shi Han, Shi Yen and Bb. A bunch of fun-loving beer-drinking people who desired to be beach boys and girls for a miserable 2 days. At Mawai eating Bak Ku Teh (Pork Rib Soup) for breakfast, suppose to be famous but I thought it was ok. Rm 45. Not VERY cheap, but everybody was in high spirits.

After note: My mum asked me why I wasn't in the picture. It took me 5 seconds to realise that it was because I was taking the picture.

First time in Mersing. Note that there was big Mersing board on top of the hill. Kind of interesting, announcing all travelers that they had reached the town. Small town atmosphere and surprisingly refreshing.
Bb's legs. Just took the picture for fun when she attempted to climb over the railings at Mersing ferry terminal while we were waiting for the ferry to go Tioman. I thought that the picture was quite well done and it reminds me of the excitment we had.
Kampong Tekek. Fisherman sitting lazily by their fishing boats talking about their dreams. It was just another day after all.
Pulau Tioman!!!! Me and Bb snapped a picture as this signboard greeted us immediately after arriving at Kampong Tekek, the administrative center of Tioman.
The Gang of Four posing in front of the Balai Polis (Police Station) in Tioman. We downed a couple of cold beers before that as the weather was simply too hot. Oh boy, cold beer at Rm2/can (Carlsberg, Tiger, OB), Rm2.3/can (Heineken). Yes.... We were on a holiday and we KNEW it!
At our new found "friend" Ah Seng's shop. He is a friendly guy and agent for ALL the duty free beers in Tioman. He sold the coldest beer in town and we bought about 10 cans of Carlsberg. And guess what, I found Hoegaarden at Rm4.7/pint!!!! That's half price of what I pay in Singapore. I bought 5 pints and he wrapped it individually. We chatted with him and brought us to take a ferry to Kampong Salang at Rm10/person.
The saturday afternoon hot sun. My cousin Shi Yen at Salang Guesthouse, Rm40 per night. Picture taken by Bb. I thought it was a great angle.
The drinking session starts. Pp with a Heineken in the afternoon hot sun. Life away from reality is always wonderful, no matter how short it is.
Sunset at Tioman. Nice evening sun. Wonderful picture.
