Mae
Salong. Wonderful climate, beautiful mountains and all is
all. The best thing is everybody speaks Mandrain here and
we have absolutely no problems in communication. Although
it was in the rainy season, walking in Pouchos and exploring
the hills and the Akha tribes is a great relief from work.
2
nites dont felt like 2 nites at all. It seems like a twink
of a eye. Mornings will be going to the markets for the
soya bean milk, sa lau pao and you tiao. Afternoons will
be drizzling but we can visit tombs of former generals or
sip Mae Saelong coffee while admiring the cloudy hills.
At night will be to sit outside the small guesthouse drinking
Yunanese beer, listening to anti-commie stories from the
Shin Sane (name of guest house) auntie and other backpackers.
Does
anyone wants to go home if he/she was in my shoes? |

Bb (my ex)
in front of the Mae Saelong mosques. The greatness of Islam
had spread to China in the 15th century and have certain
yunanese converts. I thought it was great to hear the Quran
early in the morning everyday. Too bad we wasn't in Mae
Salong on a friday or we could have seen how they prayed. |

At Mae
Saelong Resort. This was managed by the newphew of the surviving
general and it serves quite nice mushroom dishes (quoted
from Lonely Planet). This pictures denotes routes through
the various towns and camps which the remaining 93rd div
Kuomingtang (and their families) took when advancing the
Liberation army cut their connection from main KMT troops.I
can never imagine going to a war bringing my family along. |

Bb (my ex) posing
at a row of steps. Note that small shrubs have covered the
stairs. It seems that the steps links to monks' quarters. |

Bb (my ex) in
front of Wat Chet Bodi. Nice view from top. It was closed
as it had just been renovated and waiting for Thai royalty
to commission it. God knows how we made it up. I think I
pee along the way up as well. |

Bb (my ex) at
General Duan's tomb. Best view on the hill overlooking Mae
Salong. Heard that he has chosen this burial side long before
he left this world. Seems that he wanted to look out for
the whole Mae Salong's eternal peace and prosperity. The
angle on which this photo was taken was requested by Bb.
Suppose to be very picturesque. My stupid hands spoilt the
photo. |

Breakfast
at Mae Salong market at 7pm. Soya Bean Drink and You Tiao.
7B! We had it for two mornings. |

Me outside
the market. The man didn't know that I was posing for a
photograph. |

Timer
function. Posing for a picture in the small house
we stayed in. Wonderful. 300B/nite with hot shower. I have
never rested so well in 2004. |

Bb (my ex) and
Pp with the owners of Shin Sane. All of her sons are living
in Taiwan or Malaysia. She was the 1st generation woman
"commrade" in 93rd Div KMT. Very nice lady. Displayed
typical chinese business women characteristics by building
the 1st guesthouse in Mae Salong. Her sons have urged her
to leave Mae Saelong for more "urbanised" pastures.
She refused and can't bear to leave her guesthouse, something
which she built with her own hands. Imagine the pieces of
timber she brought from Mae Chan (40km) by horse back (in
the 70s there were no well-paved roads). |
